How is wire mesh size calculated?
A wire mesh size chart compares mesh count, wire diameter and clear opening. For regular square woven mesh, opening (mm) = 25.4 ÷ mesh count − wire diameter (mm). At 20 mesh with 0.40 mm wire, the nominal opening is 0.87 mm (870 µm). Mesh count alone does not determine the opening.

How to Read the Chart
Mesh count alone does not define an opening. Read the wire diameter and opening together.
1Mesh count
Openings per linear inch (25.4 mm). A higher count generally produces smaller openings when wire diameter is comparable.
2Wire diameter
The thickness of one wire. The same mesh count can use different wire diameters and have different clear openings.
3Opening size
For regular square woven mesh: opening (mm) = 25.4 ÷ mesh count − wire diameter (mm). Multiply mm by 1,000 for µm.

Wire Mesh Size FAQ
How do I convert mesh count to opening size?
For regular square woven wire mesh, opening (mm) = 25.4 ÷ mesh count − wire diameter (mm). Multiply the opening in mm by 1,000 to obtain microns. For example, 20 mesh with 0.40 mm wire has a nominal opening of 0.87 mm, or 870 µm.
Why does the same mesh count have different openings?
Wire diameter changes the clear opening at the same mesh count. At 20 mesh, 0.40 mm wire gives a nominal opening of 0.87 mm; 0.50 mm wire gives 0.77 mm. Specify both mesh count and wire diameter when comparing sizes.
Are the photo labels inspection certificates?
No. The cards transcribe the supplied photo labels; some values are rounded. Nominal openings are calculated for regular square weave. Confirm measured dimensions, tolerances, weave and material documentation for your order.
Does this chart give a Dutch weave filtration rating?
No. Dutch weave does not have the same regular square openings. Request product-specific filtration data for the selected weave and application instead of applying the square-opening formula.
