How to Define Your Perforation Pattern
A perforation specification combines hole shape, hole size, centre-to-centre pitch and arrangement. These dimensions determine the open area and remaining metal between holes; they must be selected together with sheet thickness and material.
Hole Size, Pitch & Bridge Width
- For round holes, specify the diameter and whether the rows are straight or staggered.
- For slots, specify width, length, end shape, orientation and pitch in both directions.
- Bridge width is the metal remaining between neighbouring holes. For a straight row of equal round holes, it is pitch minus diameter.
- State whether open area applies to the perforated field or the entire sheet, including solid borders.

Cutting, Edge Condition & Fabrication
Specify overall width and length, dimensional tolerances, squareness, burr direction and any deburring requirement. Show solid borders, fixing holes, notches and cut-outs on the drawing.
For bent or formed parts, provide the finished drawing, bend lines and required orientation of the hole pattern. Confirm the fabrication sequence and surface finish before production.

How do I specify round holes or slots?
For round holes, state the diameter, centre-to-centre pitch and straight or staggered arrangement. For slots, state width, length, end shape, orientation and pitch in both directions. Include the sheet thickness and solid margins.
What is the difference between pitch and bridge width?
Pitch is the centre-to-centre spacing between holes. Bridge width is the metal remaining between neighbouring holes. For equal round holes in a straight row, bridge width equals pitch minus hole diameter.
Can I order cut-to-size sheets with solid borders?
Yes. Show the finished width and length, solid border dimensions, hole-pattern limits, cut-outs and fixing holes on the drawing. Confirm tolerances, burr direction and edge condition before production.
How should open area be specified?
State the target percentage and whether it refers to the perforated field or the full sheet including solid margins. Hole size, pitch and arrangement must be reviewed together to meet the target.
